While some owners elected to use pavers instead of traditional concrete, this is labor-intensive, more costly, and comes with maintenance issues of its own.
Asphalt driveways tend to last longer in the Redmond area than concrete ones however. This is because they are more affordable than many concrete installations, and asphalt is very well-suited for resisting harsh winter weather – which is why they are becoming a popular option for some owners in the Central Oregon areas.
Making Your Asphalt Driveway in Oregon Last Longer
While asphalt is durable, it isn’t immune to the effect of cold weather. If you’ve got an asphalt driveway, or are considering installing one, there are several things you can do to help it last longer:
- Clean spills: Spills, especially from oils, can cause damage to asphalt unless they are cleaned up fast.
- Be careful with ice melt: Ice melt is great for safety, but the chemicals and salt used in many ice melts can be damaging to the surface of your driveway. Avoid using them unless absolutely necessary and use sparingly.
- Don’t scrub too hard: The layer of pebbles and gravel that tops many asphalt driveways is important – it helps protect the asphalt from damaging UV light and other issues. When cleaning or power-washing your driveway, don’t grind this top layer off when possible.
- Consider sealing: It’s common advice to seal your asphalt driveway every few years, which is intended to protect it against water and light. It’s not certain how much good a driveway sealcoating actually does for asphalt, but if you want every protection option then it’s a good project to consider.
What to Do When It’s Too Late for Your Driveway
If your asphalt driving is heavily damaged, you may want to consider resurfacing entirely. This focuses on broad repairs and a new top layer to help deal with all current damage and may be able to save and restore your driveway.
